Pobla de Segur and the red cliffs

Near Pobla de Segur there are beautiful red cliffs Rocs de Queralt, off we go to experience them. On the way we stop in a little town Geri de la Sal located near the same river as Baro (were we stay). Geri de la Sal has lovely Roman bridge, monastery and very cool street signs.

Mountains near Llessui

We drive North to Sort by Noguera Pallaresa river. Just after the Sort we then turn left and proceed the mountain road to the Llessui village. The track starts just behind the village near the end of the public road. A part of the parking place is barred by fence – looks like it is used to collect the cattle for transportation. We park near the fence and start our hike.

Montcortes, Sallente and lake Gento

Today we approach the Aigestortes park by the valley of river Flamisella, just next to the West from our river Noguera Pallaresa. We drive there over the mountain pass to Pobletta de Bellvei, then by the valley to the North – to Cabdella and further to Sallente basin.

Malmercat and Tornafort

The track starts right near our doorstep. We cross La Noguera Pallaresa by the wooden pedestrian bridge and soon step on a mountain path. Our hotel is located 600m above the see level, the Malmercat village  is some more 300m uphill and 4km walk by the woody mountain slopes.

Pyrenes – the national park of Aigestortes

We arrive in Pyrenees on afternoon September 28th from the Millau (France) where my wife Ilze attended a Nordic Walking Marathon. We were drivind Millau – Narbonne – Perpignan, then Prades – Villenfranche-de-Conflent, then crossed the Spanish border near Puigcerda and followed by the South border of Andora to Sort, and finally to the village of our stay Baro.

Baro is located next to La Noguera Pallaresa stream. Our hotel Alt Pirineu (high Pyrenees) is a small three storey building near the highway. We spent here 10 lovely days, thanks to our hosts – Silvia un Mark.

Our destination is Parc Nacional Aigüestortes i Estany de Saint Maurici – the only one national park of Catalonia. Aigüestortes means a winding water in Catalan. It has indeed lot of winding mountain streems as well as  almost 200 lakes and a number of summits, 3017m  high Besiberri Sud being the highest. Pyrenees mountain goats (izard), marmots, stoats, deer, black woodpeckers, golden eagles and others live here.
